You might have heard that I sold 1,400 lobsters and won a waiter contest.
At first, I tried to “sell” lobsters and it didn’t work. Then I learned a way to sell the lobsters without making a sales pitch. This approach worked so well I wrote a book about it called How To Sell A Lobster, which has been sold in 25 countries and translated into 12 languages.
The success of my lobster campaign launched my BIG Idea coaching business. Since that time, I’ve helped more than 5,000 companies sell their products and services—without selling. We tested and refined a suite of counter-intuitive, non-selling strategies and techniques that generate faster, easier and more profitable sales.
Let’s face it. Selling stuff is not fun. Most people don’t respond, and if they do, many of their responses are negative. It can be demoralizing. And these days it doesn’t work very well at all because people have retreated into what I call The Sales Pitch Bunker. Annoyed by endless salespeople pitching them by phone, e-mail, text, social media, and traditional media, they use technology to block out salespeople. Think about yourself: How do you treat salespeople when they knock on your door? You likely block them out.
This problem will only get worse with the advent of Generative A.I. Already, millions of companies already use A.I. to generate sales-oriented marketing content. The marketplace is being flooded with even more sales pitches. And of course, people will learn to use A.I. to block out those sales pitches. An endless cycle.
That’s why it’s silly to think that your prospects won’t treat you the same way. If they think you are a salesperson trying to sell them something, they will block you out. They will also lump you in with all the pushy, sell-interested and noisome salespeople they come across. That will undermine your reputation.
